Sun Conures / Cage Size and Consideration

Sun Conure Cage Size

When it comes to cages, the bigger, the better. Sun conures like plenty of room, and will need enough room inside of their cages to "float", so that means enough room to flap their wings freely, without anything touching the tips.

The absolute minimum cage to consider would be 20x20x24. We use breeder cages that are 32 inches wide by 32 inches tall by 20 inches deep.

The cage should have a perch up high, a swing in the center, and it's best to locate any hanging toys near the sides so that the center of the cage is open for flight.

Sun conures will spend the majority of their time climbing on the sides of the cage, and they are clearly capable of projecting their droppings throught the bars and outside of the cage. For this reason, it is a good idea to keep the cage about 6 inches to a foot away from the wall. Otherwise you might have to spend a great deal of time cleaning your wall off.

Always be sure to keep the cage bars wiped down if droppings are present.

Toys! Sun conures love to play and to chew, so pick toys that will satisfy both. Toys should have wood or rawhide, and a bell or other noise-maker, and should not just be made completely of plastic. 2 toys is usually a really good number because it is plenty to keep them occupied without cluttering up the cage. If you want to, you can switch the toys out with different ones from time to time. That way, if they get bored, you can bring in an old toy and they will see it as a whole new toy!
