Lionhead rabbits are extremely sweet, docile, and social pets. They love attention and usually will seek it from anyone within reach, much like a cat or a dog! Lionheads are considered an inside pet, and most can be litter box trained, but they are also able to live outside as long as they are well protected from extreme weather. They live to be around 8 years old, and are not aggressive.
Lionhead rabbits also make very good mothers, pulling fur from their own manes to create a soft, warm nest, in order to keep their young kits warm and comfortable. They also make it obvious when they want to breed, by rubbing their chin on anything available, and spray as well, so if a person wishes one as an inside pet, they might consider spaying or neutering it.
Both males and females have equal manes. They have fur two to three inches in length, covering the entire head fringing between the ears and goes into a V shape below the neck. In Double-Manes, the long lower mane continues down the chest to the sides on the bottom, all the way to the fluffy tail.
Unlike long haired and Jersey Wooleys, the lionhead rabbits hair does not tend to mat so much, but is instead, soft and fluffy. Regular and careful grooming is a must. They love being brushed!
It is believed that these beautiful rabbits were first introduced from Belgium, by crossing a mini Swiss Fox and a Belgian Dwarf, and possible a Jersey Wooley. The French call them "Tete de Lion".The majority of lionhead rabbits are bred in France And other parts of Europe.
